OKOTOKS, AB - It came down to one game. The Medicine Hat Mavericks and the Okotoks Dawgs squared off Thursday night with the WCBL Championship as the prize.

Both teams were held scoreless in the first, with the Dawgs scoring first in the bottom of the second with runs from Eric Machej and Caleb Lombard. The Dawgs bats came alive in the third with 2 more runs by Logan Grant and Trent Lenihan off 3 hits.

With the Mavs still scoreless mid-fifth, the Dawgs added another run from Trent Lenihan to lead 5-0. It was only then, at the top of the sixth, did the Mavs bats come alive. The Mavs scored 5 runs by Stark, Gardner, Bean, Tarver and Savage off 2 hits and 2 errors.

The Mavs looked like they were still in it and a chance to comeback late in the game with the score tied 5-5 mid-sixth. Unfortunately, the Dawgs still had some bite left and scored 6 runs in the bottom of the sixth to retake the lead and stay there.

The Dawgs would score 2 more in the eighth to seal the deal and take home the WCBL Championship on home turf. The Mavs finished the night with 5 runs off 6 hits and 2 errors while the Dawgs had 13 runs off 14 hits and 2 errors for a final score of 13-5.

The Dawgs proved they were the best team of the regular season and playoffs by winning their 7th league Championship and their 3rd in the last 5 years. Congratulations to the Champs and to the Mavs for an outstanding effort against a strong team. As they say…there’s always next year. Go Mavs Go!
